Mar 08, 2010 · I've used 4.2.2.1 as tertiary and also when I'm at a client's site and the ISP's DNS servers are unknown. I've never had issues. I'd rather use the ISP's DNS servers as they are many less hops away therefore the response should be faster, but not always depending on the load of the ISP's DNS servers (Some of my clients have terrible ISP's). 4.2.2.1-4.2.2.6 are all PUBLIC DNS servers -- that is, they are intentionally resolving DNS inquiries for the public Internet. (vs. accidentally doing so). There are LOTS of other public DNS services for a list, check out any Google search for "public DNS". MANY large ISPs have publich DNS servers, including Verizon, Comcast, & RoadRunner. In our example, the query is forwarded to the remote DNS server at headquarters, 10.50.1.253.
